Teeth Whitening
Hi there! We’d like to discuss one of the most popular trends in dentistry right now – TEETH WHITENING – otherwise known as teeth bleaching.
Let’s start with the basics shall we?
What is teeth bleaching/whitening? Simply put, whitening is the process of lightening your teeth and giving them a brighter appearance.
We understand that having brown or yellow teeth may leave you feeling slightly insecure, making it harder for you to share your smile with the world, but we’re here to tell you that there are safe options to keeping your teeth brighter – and FYI – without compromising their health.
We are aware of all the quick whitening hacks and tricks which have gone viral. How to whiten your teeth using some common household products? Buying some charcoal paste online? Yup, we know about that. We have to admit- based on very few reports, some do believe they work and give may give you quick noticeable results. But did you know? They may pose a threat to the health or your teeth and oral hygiene in the long run? We thought so.
Here are some of the popular teeth whitening trends which we at Dr Bee Family Dentists hope you DON’T try:
- Baking soda – baking soda has proven to be very abrasive, which simply means that it scratches your enamel and results in less protection against cavities and results in sensitivity.
- Lemon juice and apple cider vinegar – these products can cause erosion of enamel, which will eventually increase the risk of cavities and sensitivity.
- Non-customized bleaching trays – these definitely do not fit over everyone’s teeth like they should, using ill-fitting whitening or bleaching trays which can lead to a number of oral problems during use of bleach – the obvious one is leaking of the bleach onto your soft tissue [read ‘gums’]. Which also means product loss and less effective whitening. So please, consult your dentist for safe, customised bleaching trays.
Great news! Because we at Dr Bee Family Dentists care about your smile, we have put together some budget friendly tips on how to keep your teeth whiter while maintain their health:
- First and foremost – Don’t miss your bi-annual dentist appointment every 6months!
- Be mindful of what you eat and drink, stay away from the pigmented foods and drinks like curries and sodas.
- Make sure that you follow proper at home oral care
- If you want a good alternative to bleaching- you can do it in the chair with your dentist. Just ask them.
- And if you would rather do it yourself at home, ask your dentist to recommend safe and effective at-home whitening products – they do exist!
