WHAT TO EXPECT:

some discomfort, swelling & pain is NORMAL in the first 3days

Day of Procedure

  • Bite firmly on the given gauze/cotton for 30min-45min
  • Swallow your saliva as it comes to keep blood clot from dislodging (i.e. do not spit or rinse your mouth)
  • If bleeding persists, bite firmly on gauze/cotton or damp teabag (any except rooibos) for 20min.
  • Limit strenuous activities i.e. gym/ exercise
  • Place a cold compress (ice pack) for the first 48 hrs
  • Take prescribed medication

Don’ts

  • Eat anything until bleeding has stopped
  • Drink through a straw
  • Smoking/drinking alcohol for 5days
  • Eat hard food (continue with soft diet for 3days)
  • Brush your teeth near extraction site for the first 24hrs (brush other teeth as normal)
  • Put fingers/tongue or any object in the socket – stay away from the socket

Pain

  • In the event of pain take only prescribed medication (avoid aspirin containing medications i.e. grandpa, disprin, compral). Paracetamal or brufen is advised
  • If you are prescribed antibiotics, please finish the course!

From the following day until healing is complete:

Rinse your mouth with lukewarm salt water 3 times daily – at least

Brush your teeth twice daily (morning and evening) – keep your mouth clean!

For wisdom teeth extractions follow the above instructions with particular emphasis on these:

  1. Watch what you eat! Avoid solid, hot and spicy food.
  2. Rest your mouth as much as possible.
  3. Elevate your head every chance you get, and avoid any exercise.
  4. Rinse your mouth with warm water and salt regularly to avoid any infections.
  5. Do not spit any water from your mouth, just let it fall out.
  6. Apply ice to your cheeks 48 hours after extraction.
  7. Take your prescribed medication.
  8. Avoid alcohol and smoking.
  9. Brush your other teeth as normal, twice a day.
  10. Always keep your mouth clean!

After few days you will feel better and will be able to return to normal activities. If you experience extreme pain/bad odour/discolouration of socket please call us!
